Energy Management

Efficient use of energy in all operations, decreasing the amount of energy consumed, and minimizing environmental impacts are among the top priorities of the Şişecam Glass Packaging Group, which has a persistent policy of using less energy in production and has integrated energy efficiency into its corporate strategy. The Group strives to increase production efficiency while taking measures to decrease energy consumption.

Decreasing energy consumption and carbon emissions will remain a priority issue in the future, which prompts the Şişecam Glass Packaging Group to develop new projects. The company emphasizes energy efficiency in all its operations from suppliers to production and from distribution to sales, and prioritizes energy management and climate change in its strategy.

Environmental Management

Aware of its responsibility to protect nature, the Şişecam Glass Packaging Group is sensitive about leaving an inhabitable world to future generations. This approach marks one of the fundamental principles of its strategic management and is integrated into all stages of its processes. Şişecam Glass Packaging Business aims to carry out all its operations for protecting the environment under the guidance of an Environmental Management System and by complying with relevant legislation and principles of sustainability.

Since the Şişecam Glass Packaging Group operates in an industry with high energy utilization, it focuses on priorities such as increasing energy efficiency. Among other concerns are decreasing carbon emissions and waste production, and the protection of natural resources.

Glass Recycling 

Glass packaging is 100% recyclable and reusable, which significantly decreases its environmental impact. The glass industry operates locally and its raw materials can be procured throughout the region, which also minimizes the environmental impact caused by transportation. Glass is inert and impermeable, which prevents any change in the taste and smell of its contents. Unlike other packaging materials, glass packaging can be infinitely reused without any loss of quality. In short, recycling glass is a never ending journey.

The process of recycling begins at the point where waste occurs, in other words after the product in glass packaging is consumed, packaging is sorted and collected separately. It continues with processing and converting them into secondary raw materials, and ends with using these recycled materials in production. Glass that is separated from other waste streams and recycled extends the usable lifetime of municipal solid waste storage fields (landfills). Besides decreasing domestic waste, the recycling of glass waste creates glass cullet, which is a vital input in glass packaging production. Re-melting recycled glass leads to considerable savings in basic raw materials. For example, using 100 kg of cullet leads to saving 120 kg of raw material. Re-melting recycled glass requires 25 to 30 percent less energy compared to primary raw materials, and emits 50 percent less carbon dioxide. The graph below shows the amount of decrease in carbon dioxide emission with increase in cullet percentage.

Glass recycling is a win-win game. Savings from costs let the industrial company win, decreased environmental impact lets the environment win, new jobs let individuals win, and most importantly, all these benefits are sustainable. The key is to make recycling a social way of life for this process to work. Recycling shapes the future of the world and must be seen as a part of daily life.

It is necessary to inform the public and raise awareness that glass is the only packaging material that remains healthy without losing any of its properties and can be recycled without losing its quality. At the same time, it must not be forgotten that everyone can contribute to sustainability and therefore to a healthy future through responsible and sensitive daily actions.

Şişecam Glass Packaging began its “Glass and Glass Again” project in 2011 in order to improve the glass recycling rate in Turkey. The project aims to raise social awareness, develop the collection infrastructure, and modernize recycling plants. The project addresses all these issues simultaneously, and we aim to use 60 percent external cullet at our plants in 2020. The real aim in this project is to bring about a change in social behavior and make the transition to a recycling society. Environment-Friendly Products

​The Şişecam Glass Packaging Group continually aims to make its products lighter by improving its design and production techniques. Lighter packaging makes savings in raw material, energy, and water possible without any change in the volume, durability, and visual quality of the packaging produced. These efforts also aim to decrease the carbon footprint of glass packaging, to make more products with less material, to attain advantages in product shipment, and to offer ease of transportation for the final use of the filled product.
